While painting a friend's apartment today, my dad decided to tell us exactly how badass, real-world his kids are.
"My kids know how to be in this world...they will always find their way. When my daughter Lisa was 4 years old we would give her money and two empty bottles of milk every day and tell her to go wait in the ration line for her sister's milk. IF she did not wait, there would be no milk for her little sister. So, rain or shine or snow, she waited in line every day for our share of the ration. We were allowed 2 liters per day. I hope her sister is grateful for what she did, at the age of 4." My sister Carmen was 2 at the time. I appreciate my dad's story - because it allows me to appreciate myself. Romania was a socialist republic in 1983, and the rationing would get much worse as they years went by.
